Stained glass in Chartres

The love story between stained glass and Chartres began in the Middle Ages and continues today, making it a center of expertise for those who want to know more about this ancient art. Many spaces are dedicated to the artisanal tradition : the Centre international du Vitrail (International Center for Stained Glass), the Galerie du Vitrail (Stained Glass Gallery) and especially its glassmakers who, by the restoration of stained glass, continue the tradition of this art in the utmost respect of the techniques used at the time.

Many workshops still operate today, whether specializing in restoration or modern creation. The oldest still around today, the Lorin workshop, has been in operation since 1846. These craftsmen are true ambassadors of this artistic technique throughout the world. Tours of their workshops are sometimes organized. More information is available at the Tourist Office.
